Dr. John and Carol Reckner of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart are quietly helping to forever change the lives of homeless and at-risk single parents.  They are doing it through Bridge of Hope BuxMont.

Carol is a social worker by training.  She joined the board of directors shortly after Bridge of Hope BuxMont was launched and soon after recruited one of the first mentoring groups from her church.

As a dentist, John spends each day with a drill in his hand!  But when his office got a call from Bridge of Hope BuxMont's staff, they responded with Christian love.  Jen*, a participant in the program, had been up all night caring for her young daughter who had a terrible toothache.  She was desperate to relieve her daughter's pain, but couldn't find a dentist who took her welfare plan.  Weaver, Reckner, Reinhart Dental Associates gave her a noon appointment that day, treating her when other offices wouldn't.

The Reckners are inspiring others to make a difference for homeless families, too.  John and other staff celebrated the practice's 10th anniversary by selling a collection of their favorite recipes to benefit Bridge of Hope BuxMont.  Friends, family and patients bought the cookbook which raised over $6,000 towards rental assistance and other case management services for homeless and at-risk families.  John recruited other local businesses to join him in sponsoring Bridge of Hope BuxMont fundraisers; and the practice has helped homeless families across the U.S. by supporting Bridge of Hope National's work to start new Bridge of Hope ministries in other communities.

For John and Carol, it's about a faith that is active.

"Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is a vibrant parish and our time here feels like such a faith journey," says Carol, a deeply spiritual woman who integrates her faith into everyday life.  "I'm a very different Catholic today than I was in my 20s and 30s.  I've learned that faith is more than worshipping the Lord in liturgy; it's putting the Word into action!"
